Mulled Wine

All I knew about mulled wine before this Christmas season was that Bob Cratchit and other Charles Dickens characters probably enjoyed a glass or two back in the time of yore.

Good thing what’s old is new again. This Victorian holiday drink is everywhere on my social media feeds. I suddenly had the urge to sit in front of the fireplace with a warm, spicy mug of yuletide spirits and listen to Christmas songs. I just had no idea how to go about mulling wine.

I gathered up a few recipes online and wrote out a list of ingredients… and then decided to let Williams-Sonoma do all the heavy lifting, so I could get to the heavy sipping faster.

This blend of mulling spice is fantastic. It includes cinnamon, orange rind, allspice and whole cloves – the essence of the mulling process. To make a basic mulled wine you’ll also need:

*1 bottle Red Wine
*1/4 cup Sugar
*Orange slices, Lemon zest, (and Cranberries if you’re feeling tart)
*Cinnamon Sticks for garnish

I used a tea ball to steep the spices in the simmering wine/sugar/fruit mixture. You could also use a cheesecloth to bundle the spices.
Simmer for 20-30 minutes, and serve warm.

So good! Bob Cratchit approved!
