I’ve never met a crepe I didn’t like. Banana…good. Thin pancake…Good. Nutella…GOOD! In Paris, crepe vendors are practically as popular as hot dog vendors are in New York. There’s one on every corner. IHOP has crepes with every type of filling you can imagine… or so I thought. That was, until my husband and I came across this sweet, french crepe restaurant between Ballard and Fremont in Seattle… Anita’s Crepes. It’s where crepes and creativity collide.
Thank goodness one of our favorite local breakfast haunts was full the other Sunday morning. It forced us to go in search of another place to eat, and we stumbled upon Anita’s. French press coffee… the promise of crepes…what’s not to like?! Turns out we were in for a real surprise!
First things first, coffee: if you’re into French Press, you can order several sizes and they leave the container at your table. So fun!
Now, to the goods: The menu flings the idea of a crepe way “out of the box.” I love that they have a long list of “savory” choices like Roasted Chicken and Wild Mushroom and House Smoked Salmon with Fresh Mozzarella. The savory selections were served on a buckwheat crepe, which I wasn’t a huge fan of, but it kind of made sense.
During our first visit. Joe had the Bacon and Cheese with Eggs, Avocado and Tomato Crepe. I went for the Salamie with marinated Artichokes and Mozzarella. Both winners!
The sign of a great restaurant, though: one visit isn’t enough. This week, I had a “me day” and treated myself to round 2.
Here’s my constant “inner battle” when it comes to eating out for breakfast: The devil on my shoulder wants the pancakes and calorie-loaded sweet stuff, the angel wants something more sensible and nutritious. The angel usually wins. This time, it was a draw!
I couldn’t help myself, so I ordered a savory crepe and a sweet one for “dessert.” (Dessert following breakfast is a thing… right?) Anyway, I tried the House Smoked Pork and Tomato with Creme Fraiche... really delicious and spicy too! This time I decided it would be a crime to leave without getting a taste from the sweet side of the menu… to go… I didn’t want to be the girl who wolfed down two meals in the same sitting (even though I snuck a few bites at the table!)
The Cinnamon Sugar crepe was so simple. Not too sweet, but not too plain. Just simply amazing.
If you’re like I used to be – I had a serious fear of eating alone – I recommend you try it. Bring a book to read at the table while you sip your coffee. When my food came, I really savored every bite and soaked up every flavor because I wasn’t concerned about how I looked while I chomped and I wasn’t preoccupied with trying to keep up a conversation. Do it once, and you might just find yourself sneaking off to explore new restaurants on your own too!
